On cool clear morning and a glimpse by headlight, you can see their "dog song's rising, howled in every octave."
Musher Q & A
When my retired sheep herding dog, Pollo, moved to the Yukon my first job was with the Dawson City Animal Shelter. I used Pollo to test the temperament and help rehabilitate dogs that came in. Pollo become my first lead dog using my sheep commands and we exercised the shelter dogs on a smaller sled. After adopting a few dogs out of Old Crow, we were hooked.
My older dogs were named for luchadors (Mexican wrestlers) and the yearlings on the team are named Maritime and Mi'kmaq names in honour of my Nova Scotian roots.
This will be my first year in which I will have raised every dog on my team from puppyhood. Most of the dogs are out of my fledgling breeding program and will be running for racing experience. My goals for the race are for the young dogs to have fun, gain experience and finish healthy with waging tails.
My favourite part is getting to see the whole team moving, running in unison. The bond between all of the dogs and musher seems like magic. The landscape wooshes by and you go down the trail with your pack trusting each other and enjoying the feeling of life lived to the fullest, moment to moment.
Pippi Longstocking was my first puppy I purchased in Alaska for my race team. Fall of 2019, the day the Chicken/Dawson border closes, I drove to pickup one female puppy from a litter in Tok. With four hours on the clock, it was a mad dash to pick Pippi up and return to the border with one minute to spare before it closed for the year, and due to COVID, the next couple years. Pippi is the matriarch of my kennel and will be running lead with her five grown up pups and two of her cousins.
In 2019 I volunteered with Clinton Creek Hospitality Stop, helping with cooking and dog water. Sandy and the rest of the crew worked non-stop around the clock to feed and warm everyone up. I met so many mushers that inspired me to chase my dream of dog racing while witnessing all the love and support for the sport on the part of the Clinton Creek Hospitality Stop, I knew then I wanted to always be a part of it one way or another.
Salsa, Cumbia and a good Nova Scotian Reel.
