Wednesday, August 3, 2016

The Boards of Directors for the Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog Race committed to a minimum purse of $120,000 USD for the 2017 race.

A total of $125,000 was awarded to the top 10 finishers in the 2016 Yukon Quest due to the $115,000 purse and an additional $10,000 raised through the Quest Guest Program.

For the 2017 race, the top 15 official finishing positions will receive a percentage of the prize money and the Quest Guest Program earnings will be distributed evenly among all finishers. The purse announcement comes before the official 2017 race sign-up day, scheduled for this Saturday, August 6.

“We are pleased to commit an increased minimum purse for the 2017 race,” stated Michael Peterson, President of the Yukon Quest Yukon Board. “We look forward to another year of great sponsors and fundraising initiatives such as the Quest Guest Program which contribute to the purse.”

Entry packages for mushers interested in the 1,000 mile race are available online or at either Yukon Quest office. Mushers can sign-up in person on August 6th at the office in Fairbanks from 12-2 pm, or at the office in Whitehorse from 1-3 pm. All mushers who officially sign up on Saturday will be entered into a drawing to win $1,300 USD.

In Whitehorse, sign-up day is part of the 3rd Annual Yukon Quest BarkFest. Taking place at the office from 11 am until 3 pm, BarkFest includes a BBQ, contests and presentations by veteran musher Rob Cooke and the RCMP on Service Dogs.

The 2017 Yukon Quest will start Saturday, February 4th in Whitehorse.
