The start of the 2014 Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog Race will be moved off of the Chena River in downtown Fairbanks to 2nd Avenue.
The relocation is due to thinner ice than normal from last week’s warm temperatures, and concern for having 2-3,000 spectators on the ice. Historically, the race ran from 2nd Avenue down to the end and then went off the Chena River at the Nordale Bridge down Chena Hot Springs Road.
Also, due to the unusually warm weather conditions in Yukon, the Finish Line of the 2014 Yukon Quest will be moved from downtown Whitehorse to the Takhini Hot Springs on the Takhini Hot Springs Road, off the North Klondike Highway. This is due to dangerous trail conditions for dog teams and mushers on the Yukon River.
All other Yukon Quest events will happen as planned. Specific checkpoint details will be released once they are available.
